Not your mother's birthday party!

Remember your childhood birthday parties?? A few games - Pin the Tail on the Donkey - open gifts - getting a sugar high on cake and soda? Well, times have changed. With childhood obesity on the rise and sedentary lifestyles, kids need more opportunities to get active!

Since opening my gym this past June, I have enjoyed creating classes and workouts for client's which make them sweat, but are fun! It's one of the great pleasures of owning my own gym.

When a client mentioned that her daughter's birthday was coming up, the idea for a "fun & fit" birthday party was born. Because we have an adjoining kitchen, we were able to "have our cake and eat it to" right on site! First the girls participated in a series of circuit - style fitness challenges and games. A favorite was the chin-ups. These girls went from thinking 20 chin ups was really good to finding they could do as many as 60! The excitement built as the girls cheered each other on, trying to be patient, as they waited for their next turn, to see how many more "they" could do. Their little hands sweaty and slipping, they just re-gripped and kept on going! It was a thrill for me to watch as they discovered just how many they were capable of doing.

Next? How to "re-fuel" with the right foods! First up was our version of soda - "Sunrise Surprises" - plain sletzer with a little unsweetned orange juice and just a splash of unsweetned cranberry juice. The girls enjoyed watching the colors mix and really liked the flavor combination. Next, they made their own guacamole from fresh avacados, talking about the benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids and the simple wholesomeness of a corn chip. To go with the chips, they made a dip with yogurt and salsa. Finally, the moment I was really waiting for.... the cake. The lights dimmed, Jill blew out the candles, and they ate, bite after bite.... oohs, ahhhhhhs and yummmmies! Then I drop the bomb - this irresistible, dense, moist, rich chocolate cake was made with .... Chick peas!

Their mouths opened in disbelief - stunned, they started to laugh as they gobbled down the last bite on their plates. We talked about the benefits of chick peas - and yes, even a mention of "poop", which elicited many giggles. Gifts, more giggles, and back out to the gym while they waited to be picked up.

Kids really haven't changed that much over the years - they really do love to be active, they just need the opportunities...

Hundreds of people showed up for the Chester Road race on July 4th. And yes, here I am running! It was a beautiful day for the race.
